Palm trees

Açaí palms, tucumãs, bacabas, peach-palms… every Amazonian appreciates the value of a palm tree. A year-round source of food, their leaves are used for roof building, basketry, and other crafts.

The same holds true for animals like macaws and tucans: palm trees are synonymous with food and shelter.

A guided visit to the Musa palm collection means much more than meeting the species that live at the Ducke Forest Reserve. It is an opportunity to become acquainted with the complex relationship humans and animals have developed with the flora over centuries of living togetherin the Amazon.
